Billie & Barney

Billie arrived at The Haven in terrible shape. She is emaciated and has a severe injury to her hind quarters. Kind Samaritans saw her trying to stand on the side of the road then she gave up and fell back into the ditch. Two couples brought her to us but were only able to donate $40, on a bill we anticipate will be at least $800. We won't know exactly what is broken until we get xrays but it looks like a high break of the left hind leg or the left side of the pelvis. She is about 20 lbs under weight. Despite the terrible discomfort from her obvious break, she was gagging and pawing, and most worried about her mouth, so upon examination, we found a stick logged laterally between here teeth high in the roof of her mouth. It looked like it was part of a rose bush, it had thorns, had festered, and had been there for a long time. Upon removal her appetite was immediately good, so it may have been the cause for her emaciation. She was so grateful to have it removed!!! She has a hunting collar on with a number but upon leaving messages there has been no response to our calls. It is also possible that she has been purposefully starved because some hunters believe that it makes the dogs faster. Anyway, we cannot proceed with her care until we bring our past vet bills up to date. Last week Barney had surgery and is already feeling much better. We have not had anywhere near the donations needed to finish that bill. Vet bills to maintain the resident population of animals weekly are $1500-$1800 and does not cover special need cases. Please do what you can to help us meet these challenges, as always, we appreciate your efforts.

From the director...

The Haven's successful rescue work is a community collaboration. Without the steadfast support of Dr Kenneth Garrett, owner of Animal Hospital of Fayetteville, our relief vets who work at The Haven, Dr. Zech, Andrews, Brown, and the frequent emergency work of Dr. Seals, tireless hours of labor contributed by our volunteers, and the generous financial support of our donors, our rescue work would not be possible. A big paws up to all those who contribute to saving the lives of our community's homeless animals!!!!!! By working together we have created a Haven which is the last best hope for our community's abandoned animals. On behalf of the animals, we salute those who walk the talk! Adopt! Volunteer! Donate!
