The Benefits and Joys

of Adopting an Adult Pet

For many people, when they think adoption, they think puppies or kittens.  However, there are many benefits and joys to adopting older pets.  Adult pets are less likely to be hyperactive and in need of constant attention.  This is especially good for families with small children or people with limited mobility.  Older pets are often already house broken, although some re-training may be required, and are past their adolescent chewing stage.  New owners can also be much more confident of the breed, size, and temperament of a fully matured pet.

An older pet can bond just as easily with a new family or individual as a younger one.  Pets, especially dogs, look for leadership throughout their lifetime and will readily become attached.

But perhaps most importantly, adopting an older pet gives him or her perhaps the first opportunity to live with their own loving family.  Because we are a no-kill shelter, some of our older pets have been with us for several months or longer.  Therefore, it is especially heartwarming to see one of them adopted and driving off with a new family.
